The fast bowler Poised for a Major Role in Iconic Rivalry

Australian cricket captain

The Australian skipper has claimed over 300 dismissals in 71 Test matches with an impressive average.

Australia's chief selector George Bailey has declared that skipper Cummins will be a central figure in this winter's historic rivalry.

There were concerns that the veteran bowler might miss the series due to a ongoing back issue that had not yet healed.

Initial reports from team management suggested no official announcement had been made regarding whether he would play, with the five-Test series kicking off on November 21 in Western Australia.

Bailey expressed that Cummins is "building up" and was "optimistic" about his chances of being involved.

"We're aware that the window is narrowing and multiple considerations involved, aside from the physical problem, but additional elements," Bailey remarked.

"The outlook is good. [We are] really confident that he's going to play a key capacity. Ideally it's the first Test. Should that not happen, we'll reassess."

Injury History

He was sidelined the ODI and T20 games against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals last month after medical tests showed a stress reaction in his back.

There is a track record of recurring issues, with recurrences in several earlier campaigns leading to absences from three Australian summers in a short span.

The bowler mentioned he would be bold in recovery efforts in his rehabilitation process to secure his spot for the Ashes.

Bailey noted that there was no confirmation if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his comeback but conceded it was "pressing" for him to regain fitness for the initial match.

Alternative Arrangements

Should Cummins not be fit, former captain Steve Smith will take over the captaincy.

All-rounder Cameron Green was excluded lately from Australia's squad for their ODI contests against the Asian giants as a safety move because of discomfort in his torso.

The selector characterized it as a "small issue and stated that Green will play in the state-level matches, so will be "well-prepared to resume bowling."

"We put so much time has gone into building out the plan for him to take part for the first Test as an batting and bowling option," he elaborated.

"Originally, he'd only feature in the first two ODIs regardless. His aggressive style the bat in limited-overs, even if it just sets him back for another day, the choice was made to adopt a safer strategy."
