Individuals Coming Off Slimming Medications Gain Back Weight at a Quadrupled Rate Than Dieters
Fresh analysis reveals that patients who stop using blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover reduced body mass far faster than those who stop conventional lifestyle programs.
Published data in a major medical journal demonstrates that while overweight people often shed a large proportion of their total mass while on the medication, the mass is regained at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.
"Users buying such drugs should be aware of the risk of rapid rebound weight gain when the therapy concludes," cautioned lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of regain means a return to original weight in about one and a half years.
Weighing Therapies
The research, which reviewed dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the effects of the injectable medications with other pills.
Scientists note that people who shed pounds through diet and exercise typically experience a slower weight regain—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.
Explaining the Fast Rebound
Doctors believe the mechanism of the jabs accounts for the accelerated weight return.
The injections imitate a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls appetite.
"Long-term administration of GLP-1 levels far above than the body's typical production might result in the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and may also reduce responsiveness to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.
"Discontinuation of this medication leads to appetite is unsuppressed, making excessive eating a significant risk."
A Lifelong Condition?
Health authorities advise the injections for individuals with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.
Professionals say that, considering the significant potential of relapse, the therapy should be considered life-long.
This view is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the findings "emphasize the chronic character of excess weight," akin to managing conditions like hypertension.
User Testimonies
Individuals who have come off the jabs describe a powerful resurgence of hunger.
"It felt as if a switch activating and you're instantly starving," recalled an individual.
This challenge is exacerbated if users have not established lasting dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.
Widespread Adoption
Figures suggest that millions of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with demand remaining high.
- Adoption is more common among women compared to males.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest usage rates.
- A large proportion obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
Ultimately, clinicians emphasize that while these medications are powerful tools for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent fix and maintained weight loss likely depends on ongoing lifestyle changes.
