At least 13 individuals killed and 98 injured in train derailment in Mexico.

A fatal train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive opposition criticisms regarding the speed and execution of the country's flagship public works projects.

The accident occurred on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a route built to link the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was designed to offer an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, intended to promote regional growth in the area.

“We are going to meticulously determine the cause of this incident,” stated the country's president.

The president confirmed that, of the around 250 passengers on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in serious condition. The official added plans to visit Oaxaca to meet those affected.

Flagship Project of Previous Administration

The Interoceanic Train was a signature public works project of the immediate past president, whose presidency concluded the previous year. This project was closely associated with his leadership's developmental agenda for the southeastern region.

Another massive train initiative from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the wider plan to stimulate the economic fortunes of a comparatively disadvantaged part of the country.

Building Management and Worries

The development of both train projects was managed by the nation's military, marking a dramatic growth of its role in civilian projects. They were executed at an accelerated rate, beating expectations to be at least partly launched before the end of that administration.

However, this rushed timetable had simultaneously sparked significant concerns over operational security.

  • Sunday's accident was the third event on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This encompasses an earlier crash this month when a train hit a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also experienced a couple of non-fatal derailments.

Calls for Review and Suspension

In the wake of the disaster, the leader of a key rival party called for an urgent halt in the development and management of all such projects.

This halt was proposed while awaiting a thorough safety audit. The party declared that the tragedy "demands immediate answers."

In response, the national leader maintained that the train had been functioning in full compliance with all safety requirements. Promises were given that the government would remain "accountable" in both the development and management of these strategic initiatives.
